The results are in – the PE department have been judging the entries for this year’s sports day logos competition.  The entries were so good, they have chosen an amalgamation of three pupils’ logos.

This logo was designed and created by:  Silas Hellis (9SJ), Lucy Coleman (8ROH) and Matthew Harris (7HMP).  Well done to them all.

Gryphon Games Logos Competition

Students from Years 7, 8 and 9 have been busy in ICT lessons, making logos for the upcoming Gryphon Games 2012.  The pupils have been using DTP skills to create a simple, but effective logo, which will be used to represent this years Sports day events (Gryphon Games).

Miss Troughton and the PE department are in the process of judging the logos, to find the winner of the competition, and the best logo!

The winner will be announced on the Blog, soon.  In the mean time, take a look below at the entries.

BTEC year 10 students learn about the importance of regular computer upgrades and computer cleaning. The students each took a computer and discovered exactly how dirty the insides can get!

As they worked, they blogged! See their comments below:

You need to clean a computer regularly because the components inside get very dusty and may not work. Mark and Alex B

The use of mini hoovers was exciting when cleaning the computers! Amy and Charlie

Compressed air worked well at cleaning computers, however is painful! Alex and Om

I successfully dismantled a CD Drive with a screwdriver! Louis and Emily

If the computer doesn’t work – clean it! Sam and Luke

Some interesting thoughts from the students!

BTEC Year 11s build computer…

The year 11 BTEC group are coming close to the end of their studies and have decided to build their own computer, using the knowledge they have gained from the practical BTEC course.

They have the challenge of choosing hardware for the PC and then putting it together.  They have this week chosen a outer case, motherboard and managed to fix this inside of the computer.

The group have decided they are going to build a “gaming” machine, which will house a super fast, powerful graphics card in order to process the high quality games of today (which they intend to test!).

BTEC Year 10s use Apple for first time…

Last Tuesday, the BTEC ICT group took part in an Apple Mac taster session, using the school’s Art & Photography Apple Mac computer suite.

After a quick presentation of “The Difference between a Mac and a Windows PC”, the group made their way to the Apple Macs and were pleasantly surprised to find many visual and physical hardware differences from the PCs they are used to using!

The group have only ever used Microsoft Windows PCs, so the swap over was quite exciting for the Year 10s.

Below are some photos of the pupils enjoying the new and exciting world of Apple! Also, read some of their comments below the post about their experiences!

ICT or Computer Science?…

As many of you will know, the UK Government are looking to change the way ICT is taught in schools, and they want to introduce some “computer science” into lessons.  This would mean learning things like computer programming.

What do you think of the recent news… see below or visit the BBC website to find out more.

“The current information and communications technology (ICT) curriculum in England’s schools is a “mess” and must be radically revamped, the education secretary has announced.

From September it will be replaced by a flexible curriculum in computer science and programming, designed with the help of universities and industry.

Michael Gove called the current ICT curriculum “demotivating and dull”. He will begin a consultation next week on the new computing curriculum. He said this would create young people “able to work at the forefront of technological change”….

  • Adding images
  • Editing and adding text / posts
  • Updating the blog

The series of workshops have been tremendous and it would seem that the “50 Plus-ers” have really gained something from the experience, and hopefully the Blog will take off!

Participants of the course should fill in the following questionnaire.

Wireless to the max!…

London 2012: Olympics to create ‘record’ wireless spectrum demand

About 26,000 members of the press are expected to cover the Olympic and Paralympic Games

The London Olympic and Paralympic Games are likely to require up to 20,000 separate wireless frequency assignments, according to the communications regulator Ofcom.

The organisation says that is nearly double the amount of licences that it granted for the city over the course of last year.

The body says that new broadcast technologies are helping drive demand.

Ofcom plans to finalise its Spectrum Olympics Plan by early February.

The regulator says it approved 12,505 applications in 2011.

It has already received 10,000 requests covering the seven-week period of the Games, but expects that number to rise thanks to the event being “the biggest media event in history”.
